Men can be victims of domestic abuse

by | Apr 29, 2020 | Uncategorized

When people think of domestic abuse, they often picture a man beating up a woman. The fact is, domestic violence does not conform to traditional gender roles.

One out of nine men experiences intimate physical partner violence, sexual violence, or harassing behaviors such as stalking. If you are experiencing domestic abuse, it is important to seek help from a skilled professional as soon as possible.

Men are reluctant to report or address issues of abuse

Men face the societal expectation that they must always appear strong and stoic. This can be a difficult stereotype to overcome. As a result, many men are reluctant to report instances of domestic abuse, lest they appear weak or vulnerable. There is also a fear that no one will believe them.

Men are also less likely to address a partner’s abuse. They may feel that it is their role to protect their partner, and tolerating abuse is part of that role. Regardless of the reasoning, remaining in an abusive relationship is dangerous to one’s physical and mental health. The situation becomes even more problematic when children are involved.

Help and resources are available

There are services in place to help men who are experiencing domestic abuse. Many programs are geared specifically toward men and the unique challenges they face. You should also discuss your legal options with a professional who understands what you are going through.

You are not alone

It can be difficult for men to recognize the signs of abuse and how it impacts their lives. Know that you are not alone in this struggle. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness and may even save your life.
